When you think of homeowners' insurance claims, you often associate them with major disasters such as tornadoes, hurricanes, or fires. There isn't much you can do to avoid these types of disasters, however there are some losses that are preventable. Here are 10 homeowners' claims that are preventable and how to prevent them.
1. Washing machine mishaps-- you should always inspect your washing machine hoses frequently for irregularities and replace them at least every three years.
2. Roof leaks and collapses-- basic roof maintenance, such as gutter cleaning and shingle replacement, is key to a longer roof life. Check overhanging tree branches and trim them away from the roof to avoid rubbing in the wind.
3. Chimney and fireplace fires-- it's hard to think about cold weather when were in the middle of the August heat, but we should still think about fireplace and chimney maintenance. Maintain a regular cleaning schedule so that when the colder weather comes, your chimney or fireplace is ready to use.
4. Theft and Vandalism-- while these claims are less common, they can be difficult types of losses to recover from. Considering installing a security system or outdoor video cameras, increase lighting on your property, and always lock your doors when you leave.
